Bozeman Senior Runs All-Time Montana Best As Elite Mile Produces Four Of The Five Fastest Miles So Far This Spring; Ellery Lincoln Closes Fast To Win Girls Mile; Hayden Williams-Downing Launches US#2 Javelin Mark By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor PORTLAND - In the aftermath of the boys mile Friday at the Nike Jesuit Twilight Relays, the good feelings and historic achievements ran deep. Nathan Neil of Bozeman powered ahead of Owen Powell of Mercer Island WA to take the win in US#2 4:01.31. Neil, who will run for Powell's dad in college at the University of Washington, smashed the all-time best for a Montana prep by more than eight seconds. "When it came down to the last 50, I just wanted to beat Owen," Neil said. "He made a really big move in the fourth lap and I'm so glad he did that. It really helped the race." The leaders went through the first 880 yards in 2:03. Neil closed in 57.95 seconds. Powell, in second in US#3 4:02.04, ran the second-fastest mile in Washington prep history, behind only the legendary Gerry Lindgren (1964). Josiah Tostenson of Crater OR, another junior, ran US#4 4:03.55 and became the fastest junior in state history in the 1,500 meters (en route time of 3:46.34). Asher Danielson of Ida B. Wells OR finished fourth in US#5 4:04.10, becoming the fourth-fastest miler in state history and the fastest ever in the Portland Interscholastic League. Vincent Recupero from Bishop Blanchet WA, fifth overall and third among juniors, ran US#8 4:06.79. In the girls mile, freshman Ellery Lincoln of Lincoln High continued her string of impressive performances by moving from fourth to first with a 65.7-second final 440 yards and running US#8 and a meet record 4:43.00. Her last lap was nearly four seconds faster than anyone else's. Chloe Huyler of Lakeridge, a junior, was second in 4:46.22 and another freshman, Sophia Rodriguez of Mercer Island WA, was third in 4:46.48. Jesuit junior Emma Bennett was fourth in 4:47.64 and Tualatin OR senior Lauren Ayers was fifth in 4:48.45. Roosevelt sophomore Aster Jones improved her 100 meters best to 11.83 seconds and won the girls elite 100 meters over Kent-Meridian WA junior Journey Cole. Cole anchored her team's 4x100 relay to victory in 47.91 seconds. Glacier Peak WA's Mateo Ganje won the boys 100 meters, which faced into a slight headwind (-1.7), in 10.92 seconds. Hayden Williams-Downing from West Linn broke the meet record in the javelin with her second throw of 165-7, which is US#2. Sherwood's Drew Smith threw 194-11 to win the boys javelin. Grant OR won the boys 4x100 relay in 41.87 and Sherwood won the 4x200 (1:28.43) and ran a state-leading 3:20.46 in the 4x400. The Camas WA girls won the 4x400 (3:55.94) and the 4x800 (9:22.44). Caleb Doddington of Crater won the 1,500 meters in 3:54.54. Zachary Leader of Redmond WA won the boys 3,200 meters in 8:59.03. Grace Degarimore from South Kitsap threw a personal best 150-4 for a meet record in the girls discus. Caroline Mauro from Catlin Gabel jumped 5-7.50 for victory in the high jump. Churchill's Addison Kleinke won the girls pole vault with 13-1, also a meet record. A fifth meet record fell in the girls triple jump, where Maleigha Canaday-Elliott of McDaniel OR jumped 38-10.25. |
